Why didn't most Germans resist the Nazis pre-1939? 🤔

  • Weimar Republic Blues: People saw the Weimar Republic as ineffective, especially post-Great Depression.
  • Nazi Employment Perks: The Nazis provided jobs! During a time of economic strain, this was huge.
    • Real-world example: Imagine getting free pizza during a nationwide pizza shortage. You might not like the chef's personality, but hey, it's free pizza.
  • SS and Gestapo Fear Factor: It was risky to openly oppose the Nazis. The Gestapo wasn't known for their sense of humor.
    • Real-world example: It's like having a strict school principal who can hear whispers. You wouldn't dare bad-mouth them!
  • Propaganda Onslaught: The Nazi PR machine constantly broadcasted their 'successes' and praised Hitler.
    • Real-world example: Think of it as seeing only 5-star reviews for a product. It’s harder to think it’s bad.
  • Exceptions
    • Some Church leaders weren't fans.
    • Some cool rebellious youth groups like the White Rose movement.
    • Socialists and Communists? Totally anti-Nazi, but the Nazis clamped down hard.
    • Church-based opposition had its reasons for not gaining traction.

Who DID resist the Nazis?

  • Upper Classes and the Army Bigwigs
    • Initially, these folks liked the Nazis for squashing Socialists and Communists, and restoring authoritative rule.
    • But by 1937, they started worrying about Hitler's aggressive foreign policies and feared a two-front war. (Yikes!)
    • The army's unease grew with Hitler's 1938 purge of its conservative leaders and his increasing personal control.

Activity Alert! 🎨 Craft a mind map of reasons for the limited resistance to Hitler between 1933–39. (Use the points above!)
