📢 Hey future historian! Let’s take a ride through Italy's post-war turbulence! 🛵💨

Italy's Political Crisis

  • Italy’s Liberal governments, between 1918 and 1922, were losing grip.
  • Political problems
    • The franchise was expanded. Liberals did poorly in 1919 elections.
    • Major political parties couldn’t create stable coalition governments, so governments didn't last long, which weakened the belief in the democratic system.
    • Real-world example: Imagine a classroom where different student groups can't agree on a plan for a class party. The constant change of plans confuses everyone, and trust in the student council's ability fades.

Economic Struggles

  • Italy was in huge debt (85 billion lire by 1919) because of borrowing from Britain and the US.
  • Money printing led to high inflation.
  • Workers' wages didn’t keep up with the rising cost of products.
  • Industries profited during the war, but post-war, government spending went down.
  • High unemployment rates.
  • Real-world example: Imagine borrowing tons of money from friends for a big party. After the party, you owe a lot and struggle to manage your daily expenses. It’s a mess!

The Left's Influence

  • The Bolshevik Revolution in Russia scared many – what if communism spread to Europe?
  • Italian Socialists wanted to overthrow the Liberal state.
  • Socialists did well in elections and became the largest party in parliament.
  • Popolari, another party, became the second-largest.
  • Real-world example: When a new trend goes viral on social media and everyone starts following it, some people fear its influence and create counter-trends.
