Historical Instability in Spain

  • The 19th century was a bumpy ride
    • Absolute monarchy 🤴
    • Military interventions 💂
    • Foreign political meddling 🌍
    • First Republican regime 🗳️
  • The Spain game: Flip-flop between conservative & liberal ideologies.

The Constitutional Monarchy, 1898

  • On paper
    • Spain = Constitutional monarchy 👑
    • King + Parliament (the Cortes) = Main power duo.
    • The king 🤴 selects a prime minister (PM) backed by a majority in the Cortes.
  • Reality Check
    • The rich and powerful call the shots, not the general male population. 💰💼
    • Two "different" parties: Conservatives vs Liberals...but same old, same old.
    • "Elections": More like rigged games, thanks to corruption. 🎭
    • Caciquismo system: Local bigwigs (caciques) pulling the election strings.

Changing Winds after 1900 🌬️

  • Socialist & republican organizations pop up in town centers. 🏙️
  • Many Spaniards = 😑 "These main parties don't get us."
  • King Alfonso XIII = Old school; No love for reform.
  • Gave Catalonia some power in 1913, but Catalan Nationalists = "Not enough!" 😡
