Tasty Tidbits 🌟

  • In Spain, think of the Catholic Church like the most popular kid in school: rich, powerful, and EVERYONE knows them!
  • Now, what happens when that popular kid tries to control everything? Drama, right? That’s exactly what happened in Spain.

The Church vs. The State: A Feud as Old as Time 🌍

  • The Concordat (1851): A fancy agreement between the Vatican (Pope’s house) and Spain.
    • Effect: Made Catholicism the VIP religion in Spain.
    • The Church could interfere in education and some economy stuff.
    • The Church was like the big brother who wouldn't let Spain modernize or be liberal.
  • Church's Squad in Spain
    • 2,390 monasteries 🏰
    • Nearly 60k monks, 33.4k nuns, and 50k clergy 🙏
    • Fun Fact: The aristocrats (the cool, rich folks) were BFFs with the Church. They funded it and were often the top leaders there.
      • But the poor people were like, “Hey, why is the Church only rooting for the rich team?” 🤔

City vs. Countryside Divide 🌆

  • Countryside: Everyone loved the Church here.
  • Cities: Not so much love. Many city folks were like, "Church? Meh."
    • Why? The Church seemed too fancy and out of touch with the struggles of urban workers.
    • Some even got SO mad that they set churches on fire and wore stolen priest outfits for fun (wild, right?).
    • Remember Alejandro Lerroux? He stirred the pot with his "Down with the Church" speeches.

📚 Education Wars: Many smarty-pants middle-class folks were like, “Why does the Church have to control our schools?”

🚶‍♂️ The Great Spanish Shuffle: Spain's population boom!

  • 1900: 18 million
  • 1930: 24 million
  • Not enough jobs, so many Spaniards packed their bags and moved to places like South America or France. But, post-WWI, many countries were like, "No more immigrants, please!" Result? Many moved to Spanish towns instead, leading to:
    • Crowded houses 🏠
    • More poverty 💸
    • And of course, more tension 😖
