🎉 Let's dive into the spicy drama of post-WWI Spain, and meet the big player – General Primo de Rivera! 🎉

Backdrop Setting 🎭

  • Time Period: After World War I, Spain's not feeling great. Imagine trying to walk after stumbling over a toy. That's Spain. Why? Losses in Morocco and post-war economic depression.
  • King’s Problem: The King, Alfonso, is like a manager trying to find the perfect team leader. He's tried 12 times between 1918-23 but none worked. The army's getting restless, sensing an opportunity.

Enter the Hero/Villain 🚀

  • Who?: General Primo de Rivera - Imagine if Spain was a movie, he'd be the surprise character making a grand entry in 1923!
  • Big Move: Declared a pronunciamiento (a fancy Spanish way of saying "Hey, I'm taking over!"), and sent the Liberal government packing their bags.
  • How Long?: He's the head honcho from 1923 to 1930.
  • The Label: People called it the Dictadura (Yep! Dictatorship). But here's a twist - despite sounding like a big, bad villain, some saw Rivera as the nice guy. They say he genuinely wanted to help Spain's poor and clear the corruption. Like a superhero? Maybe!

Rivera’s Politics 101 💼

  • Inspiration: Looked at the Italian Fascist model and thought, "Not bad!" So, he tailored it to Spain. King Alfonso even nicknamed him, ‘My Mussolini’. Cool nickname, but you decide if it's a compliment.
  • Big Changes
    • Closed the Cortes (the parliament).
    • Hit pause on the constitution.
    • Banned political parties. (Imagine banning all candy in school because you want people to like your candy the best!)
    • Said goodbye to elections and trial by jury.
    • Introduced the "Directory of Generals" to run the show.
    • Started his own party, the Patriotic Union, but it was like that new snack no one's really into.
  • Endgame?: Rivera said, "Hey! This is temporary!" But even after the official end of the dictatorship in 1925, he remained in the prime seat.
