🇺🇸 The Not-So-Neutral US

  • America's Stance: "We're neutral... but also, here's some stuff!"
    • US didn't officially jump into the NIC, because they loved their 'no interference' policy.
    • But, oops! The Neutrality Act went one step further in 1937. Not only were arms sales to warring nations banned, now it included civil wars.
    • Fun fact: This move kind of boosted Franco, helping him snag a win at the Ebro Valley in 1938. Talk about game-changer!
    • Yet, US companies like Texaco, Ford, Studebaker, and General Motors thought, "Why not support the Nationalists a little?" They supplied Franco with juicy stuff like oil and trucks. Can you imagine: The war sponsored by Ford? 🚗💨

Let's Role-Play! Activity 4 ATL Communication and social skills 🎭

Here's a challenge: You've got to convince your pals to either jump into the war or chill on the sidelines. Who are you?

  • Barcelona's Super Socialist: Fighting for workers' rights!
  • Madrid's Nationalist: Spain must stay traditional and unified!
  • Anarchist Peasant from Southern Spain: Down with authority! Freedom for all!
  • Franco's BFF: Supporting strong leadership!
  • Spanish Priest: Faith should guide our nation!
  • And many more... including folks from other countries like Germany and the US.
