Why do we need shielding? 🛡

Nuclear reactors aren't just about getting electricity from atoms! They emit super-powered particles like neutrons and gamma photons. Think of these like tiny superheroes, zipping through solid materials. But, too much superhero action isn't always good! So, shielding is a bit like giving them a comfy home to chill out in. 😊

What are we up against? 💥

  • Neutrons: Think of these as sneaky ninjas. They can pass through many things without being noticed.
  • Gamma photons: These are like the lasers in sci-fi movies. Powerful and can penetrate solid stuff.

🌎 Real-World Example: Ever heard of Superman's X-ray vision? He can see through walls just like gamma rays can! But, we want to make sure that these X-rays (or gamma rays) don't harm anyone, so we put in barriers.
