Schemas are like mental maps that guide us through life's many, often complicated, experiences. Think of them as your brain's own GPS.

 

Let's look at the different types of schemas that have been proposed

Social schemas

They're like an artist's sketch of different groups of people. Stereotypes are a classic example. Ever heard of the stereotype that all blonde people are ditzy? That's a social schema at work!

Example from real life

Imagine you're part of a study by Darley and Gross (1983). You're shown a video of a girl doing a test and told she's from a high socio-economic status (SES) background. Another group watching the same video is told she's from a low-SES background. You'd be surprised to learn that the high-SES group rated her performance better! This study shows how our preconceived notions (schemas!) about wealth and poverty affect our perceptions.
