Hello young Psychologist! Today we&#39;re diving deep into the thrilling world of our choices - why we do what we do, or sometimes, don&#39;t do what we should be doing. Our buddies for today&#39;s adventure are Martin Fishbein and his theories of reasoned action (TRA) and planned behaviour (TPB). So, put on your detective hats and let&#39;s get sleuthing!

<ul>
	<li>What&#39;s the deal?: The TRA seeks to explain why we choose to do what we do. Picture yourself deciding whether to eat broccoli or a hamburger for dinner. This theory explains that.</li>
	<li>Who&#39;s the brain behind it?: Martin Fishbein first proposed the theory in 1967.</li>
	<li>What&#39;s the bottom line?: The core idea is this - our decisions are based on what outcomes we expect. If we believe eating broccoli will make us healthier (desired outcome), we&#39;ll be inclined to do it (behavioural intention).</li>
	<li>What decides our intention?: Two things - attitudes and subjective norms. Attitudes are our views of the behaviour (broccoli = healthy or yuck?), while subjective norms are the social pressure (are all your friends eating hamburgers?).</li>
	<li>Who&#39;s the boss, attitudes or norms?: Well, it depends on the situation. Sometimes, what we think matters more, at other times, it&#39;s about fitting in with the group.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>TRA&#39;s cool cousin: In 1985, TRA got an upgrade and became the TPB. The change? A third factor came into play - perceived behavioural control. This factor handles situations when our attitude is positive, and norms don&#39;t stop us, but we don&#39;t think we can do it (like going for a run on a freezing morning).</li>
</ul>

Now, how does all this work in the real world? Let&#39;s see with some examples!

TRA and TPB have been used to understand various behaviours. One such behaviour is the usage of condoms, which is incredibly crucial for HIV and STD prevention. Let&#39;s unpack a study done by Albarracin et al (2001) on this:

<ul>
	<li>The mission: Find out why people choose to use or not to use condoms. TRA and TPB were the detectives of choice.</li>
	<li>The method: They analyzed 42 articles and 96 data sets related to condom use.</li>
	<li>The findings: Both TRA and TPB were successful in predicting condom use. The average correlation between intention and behaviour was 0.51, which is pretty impressive!</li>
	<li>The twist: The intention-behaviour link was stronger when behaviours and intentions were assessed at the same time (retrospectively). It was weaker when assessed at different times (prospectively).</li>
	<li>The limitations: The study assumes that self-reported condom use reflects actual behaviour, and the causal relationship (does intention cause behaviour or vice versa?) is not entirely clear. This is where longitudinal studies, assessing intentions and behaviours at different times, come into play.</li>
</ul>

These theories and their applications are exciting, aren&#39;t they? And hey, they might even inspire you to choose broccoli for dinner tonight! Next time, when you&#39;re making a decision, think about your attitudes, the social norms, and how much control you think you have over the situation. It&#39;s psychology at play, every day!
