Ever wondered if your obsession with Fortnite or endless TikTok scrolls are messing with your attention span? Some researchers think it might be possible, linking the rise of digital technology to increased rates of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). The basic idea is that fast-paced and flashy tech experiences, like TV and video games, might not prepare us well for less exciting tasks like reading a super lengthy textbook.

 

Real-world example: Imagine you're at a concert with crazy light effects and ear-popping sound. It's thrilling, it's fast, and it's all very stimulating. Now, imagine going straight from that concert to a quiet library. You'll likely find it a bit challenging to focus on reading a book. This is kind of what it's like when we switch from fast-paced tech to slower, more demanding tasks.

🎯Evidence-the swing et al. study (2010) 📚

This study saw a link between gaming and reduced classroom attention in kids aged 6-12. They did four check-ins over a year and collected data from teachers, who reported issues like off-task behaviour, interruptions, and lack of attention. What they found was that playing games at the start of the study was linked to a rise in attention issues over time. Kiddos who clocked over two hours of daily screen time (TV and games) were more likely to have attention problems later on.

 

Real-world example: Think of it like eating too much junk food. Having a few chips won't do much harm, but if you're chomping down bags of chips daily, you might find yourself with a tummy ache or two down the line. Similarly, overdoing screen time, especially gaming, seems to lead to attention problems later on.
