Grab your detective hat and magnifying glass, because we're diving into the world of psychological disorder diagnosis. It's a bit like a never-ending mystery!

Classification system & its effect on prevalence

Remember the DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders? It's like a recipe book, but instead of food, it lists symptoms for diagnosing mental disorders. Here's the fun part: with every new edition, this 'recipe' changes. A spice may be added, removed, or replaced—much like the bereavement exclusion for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) being removed from DSM-5.

The Real-World Example: Think of it like a fashion trend, where last year's must-have clothing item becomes passé the next. In this case, the changing 'trends' of symptoms may lead to higher estimates of prevalence rates.

However, just as no fashion trend exists independently of societal norms and perceptions, there's no prevalence rate independent of a classification system.
