1️⃣ Engaging at work - happiness & misery

Average Hours at Work: People spend 39 hours/week working. It's a big chunk of life!

  • Happiness at Work: Patrick Lencioni says that being engaged at work = happiness.
  • Causes of Misery: Feeling invisible (anonymity), your job doesn't matter (irrelevance), and no control over performance (immeasurement).

📌 Real-World Example: Imagine you're working at a fast-food joint, and your boss never notices you, doesn't care about your tasks, and never tells you how you're doing. Pretty miserable, huh? You need connection, meaning, and feedback to feel happy.

2️⃣ Work engagement traits 🌟

  • Vigour: Energy & resilience towards work.
  • Dedication: Pride & enthusiasm in what you do.
  • Absorption: Being totally caught up in your work.

📌 Real-World Example: Think of your favorite teacher who is always excited, puts their heart into teaching, and gets lost in their subject. That's an engaged person at work!

3️⃣ Stress ingredients 🧪

  • Novelty: Something new happens.
  • Unpredictability: Unexpected events.
  • Threat to Ego: Feeling incompetent.
  • Lack of Control: Little control over situations.

📌 Real-World Example: Remember the first day at a new school? New faces (Novelty), unexpected quizzes (Unpredictability), not knowing answers (Threat to Ego), and new rules (Lack of Control) – all stressful ingredients!
