Personality hardiness

Personal hardiness is like your own superhero shield against stress. Think of it as mental muscles that help you face life's challenges. Researchers like Suzanne Kobasa and Greenwald (1979) found out that:

  • ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Strong commitment to self.
  • ๐Ÿ’ช Vigorous attitude toward the environment.
  • ๐Ÿง  Sense of meaningfulness.
  • ๐ŸŽฎ Internal control over your life (not a video game controller, but your own mindset!).
  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Hardiness can be improved with training, like leveling up in a game (Maddi et al, 2009).

Imagine being a CEO! Ouellette et al (1985) found that the best way to avoid stress for business executives was a mix of hardiness, exercise, and having good friends. But hardiness is the star player here. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Personality types - A & B

  • ๐Ÿš€ Type A: These are the high-speed race car drivers of life—competitive, self-critical, and impatient. Watch out! They might be at a higher risk for heart disease (Friedman and Rosenman, 1974).
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Type B: These are the chill surfers who prefer a slower pace. Put them with a Type A, and things can get stressful (Jamal, Baba and Carlson, 2003).

Think of Type A as a speedy hare and Type B as a slow and steady tortoise. ๐Ÿฐ vs. ๐Ÿข

Mindfulness & meditation

  • ๐Ÿง˜‍โ™‚๏ธ Mindfulness is like focusing on the NOW. It's the opposite of reaching for a cookie and finding you already ate it without noticing (mindlessness).

  • ๐Ÿšซ Ignore the haters who call it "flakey." There's solid science behind it.

  • ๐Ÿ“ข Jon Kabat-Zinn made mindfulness cool again, and it's not a new-age fad.

  • ๐Ÿง  Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) can boost concentration, reduce stress, and make you feel more vigorous.

  • ๐Ÿญ Dow Chemical found that online MBSR works for employees, and even nurses and healthcare professionals benefit from it.

  • ๐Ÿงฉ Plus, it's good for your heart (Loucks et al, 2015) and fights against our gadget-filled distracting world.
