Big idea- why measure effectiveness?

We're trying to figure out if a treatment works, right? But why? Well, that's because we want our therapy to be evidence-based. We don't want to just guess if something is working - we need the hard facts!

Severity of the disorder

Consider your buddy Bob. He gets a bit sad sometimes, while your friend Alex seems really, really down. Treatment for Bob might not be the same as for Alex. Some treatments work best with mild cases like Bob's, while others might be needed for severe cases like Alex's.

Treatment outcomes

Imagine therapy like a multi-level video game. Each level might represent a different treatment outcome - like decreasing visible symptoms, making life feel better overall, or improving medical tests. A magic power-up (a.k.a. a treatment) could help you ace one level but not do much on another.

For instance, antidepressant drugs are like a fast-acting power-up, quickly helping reduce symptoms but might not last long. Other treatments might work slower but have more enduring effects. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
