Criterion a -setting the stage 🎯

  • What? It’s about your topic, research question, and method of research.
  • Why? Justify the study's importance. Why does it matter?
  • How? Be clear and focused.
    • Real-world Example: Instead of saying, "I’m researching sleep", you might say, "I’m researching the impact of electronic devices on teenage sleep cycles."
  • Pro Tip! Use specific psychology terms, but make sure they're accurate.

Criterion b - knowledge & understanding 📘

  • What? Relevance of your knowledge to your research question.
  • Knowing vs. Understanding:
    • Knowing: Brazil's capital is Brasília.
    • Understanding: Brasília became the capital in 1960, moving from Rio de Janeiro to promote development in Brazil's interior.
  • How? Use sources to back up claims and utilize relevant vocab.
  • Remember: Explaining “why” and “how” shows depth!

Criterion c - think critically 💡

  • What? Heart of your essay.
  • How? Examine research design, look for assumptions/biases, and explore alternative theories.
  • Real-world Example: If a study claims, "all teenagers are addicted to their phones," question it! Maybe they only surveyed a tiny group.
  • Be Bold! 🦸‍♂️ Don’t be shy to question published research. If something seems off, call it out.
  • Pro Tip! Use your original ideas; don't just rewrite someone else's thoughts. If you borrow, cite!
