🐭Did You Know? Every time a psychologist plans to include cute (or not-so-cute) animals like mice or monkeys in their research, they have to follow some strict rules. Let’s dive deep into the do's and don’ts!

📜 i Professional associations & their role

  • Big groups, like the American Psychological Association (APA), create guidelines for psychologists all over the world about how to conduct research with animals.
  • Example: If you're a basketball player, think of the APA as the referee making sure the game's played right.

🧪 ii Animal research must have a purpose

  • The why behind the study! No using animals for fun experiments.
  • It should either
    • Add to our knowledge about behavior.
    • Help us understand a particular species better.
    • Benefit humans or other animals.

🐦 Example: Studying how birds navigate can help improve GPS technology for us

🐰 iii Picking the right animals

  • Choose the species that fits the research best.
  • Use the least number of animals necessary.
  • Assume: If it would hurt us, it would probably hurt them too.

🐸 Example: If you’re studying a frog’s jumping behavior, you wouldn’t use a sloth. (Because, come on, sloths don't jump!)

📃 iv Getting the green light

Before the fun starts, all plans have to be approved by the Ethics Committee. They're like the guardians of animal rights.
