What are cognitive schemas?💡

  • Remember the EC Tolman’s rat study? Well, these little creatures picked the pathway leading to food rewards as if guided by an internal map! 🐭💡 That map is like a cognitive schema.
  • Cognitive schemas are like our brain's own personal Google Maps! 🌍📍 They're mental representations that organize our knowledge, beliefs, and expectations.
  • Schemas are like superheroes of the mind. They're deeply rooted and well-organized, derived from prior experiences. 🦸‍♀️🧠
  • Example: You don't panic when your regular drive-thru is closed. You quickly adapt and decide to go to another one. Why? Because your "fast-food restaurant schema" saves the day! 🍔🍟🦸‍♂️

Schemas and behaviour 🏃‍♀️

  • Mental representations (like schemas) guide our behaviour.

  • However, not all mental representations are schemas! Only the ones that organize our knowledge, beliefs, and expectations get the coveted title of "schema."

  • Example: Meet a person who says they love August. You probably won't prepare differently for a meeting with them because you don't have an "August-lovers schema." 🌞📅

Studying schemas🔬

  • Schemas are like invisible ninjas. You can't see them directly, but you can see their effects! 🥷💨

  • Researchers study schemas by looking at their impact on memory processes like encoding, storing, and retrieving information.

  • Example: Suppose you meet a 60-year-old Colombian. Your "age" and "cultural" schemas might influence your memory of this person! 👴🌎
