Government influence on health behaviors

How? By laws, taxation, subsidies, food labels, age limits, and geographic restrictions on sales.

Fun Fact: Imagine if ice cream had a label saying "WARNING: May cause happiness and a belly!" That's kind of what governments are doing with food labels for health - though a little more serious.

Food labelling

  • What's Happening? Many governments are using food labels to remind consumers about potential health risks.
  • Why? To create "cognitive dissonance" - that's a fancy term for the uncomfortable feeling you get when you know something's bad for you but you want it anyway. Like knowing candy isn't healthy but craving it during a movie!
  • Does It Work? It relies on consumer education and interest.

Real-World Example: The FDA changed their food labelling to highlight links between diet and chronic diseases.

International efforts to prevent obesity

  • Chile & Mexico: They're facing rising obesity rates like the US and have made strong moves against it.
  • Chile's Super Strict Laws: They've enacted some of the toughest food labelling laws globally, highlighting substances like sugar, fats, and salt.
  • Think of it Like This: If you were playing a video game, Chile's laws would be on the "extreme difficulty" setting.
