Hold on tight because we're about to dive into the world of stress! And no, we're not talking about the stress from forgetting to do your homework. We're going into the real science of stress, and we're bringing along our guide, Robert Sapolsky, a leading psychologist who knows why Zebras don't get ulcers (Spoiler alert: They don't worry about homework).

Ready? Let's dive in!

Definitions of stress 📖

Stress is like that teacher who can't decide what they want to be – confusing, multifaceted, and means different things to different people. So what is stress? Let's break it down:

  • Acute Physical Stressors: The "short and spicy" stress, like running away from a lion (or, more likely, a wasp in your car). It's temporary, boosts your body's energy, and then... poof! It's gone, back to body balance, aka homeostasis.

    • Real-World Example: Ever felt your heart race at the dentist? That's an acute physical stressor!

  • Chronic Physical Stressors: The "long-term struggle," like walking miles to find food. Not common in the West but can impact the body for a long time. Thankfully, humans are good at bouncing back!

    • Real-World Example: Ever seen a documentary about survival in harsh conditions? That's chronic physical stress!

  • Psychological and Social Stressors: The "human specialty." We create or imagine these stressful events that bother us for a long time. Stuck in traffic? Annoyed by a conversation with your boss? Yep, these are our daily stress cocktails!

    • Real-World Example: Stressed about exams or a teacher you don’t like? You're feeling psychological stress!

  • Chronic Intermittent Stressors: The "on-and-off" stressors, like regular exams or meetings with unpleasant people.

    • Real-World Example: Ever felt stress about a series of upcoming exams? That's chronic intermittent stress!

Stress & health 🏥

Positive and Negative Sides: Stress can both boost health and be a risk factor for obesity, substance abuse, and diseases. It’s like that double-edged sword in the movies – can help you or harm you.

Work-based Stress: The 21st-century monster! With increasing stress at work, this is becoming a major health concern. It's time to take a closer look!
