The great brain debate 🧠

Imagine your brain as a busy city. Now, is it more like a city where every building has its specific task (like a coffee shop only for coffee)? Or is it more like a multi-purpose arena that hosts concerts, sports events, and conventions? Let’s dive into some classic psychology to see!

1️⃣ The rat-maze runner arl lashley

  • Who? Karl Lashley (1890–1958)
  • What did he do?
    • Trained rats to run through mazes looking for yummy food. 🐀🧀
    • Then, (here's the sci-fi bit) after they learned, he removed parts of their brains and saw what happened.
    • Result: The rats still remembered the maze. 🤯
  • What does it mean? It suggested that memories aren't stored in just one specific place in the brain, but could be more spread out.

2️⃣ Two sides of the brain debate

  • Team A: Localizationists (like Broca, Wernicke, and Penfield)
    • Their idea? Specific brain parts = specific tasks.
    • E.g. If a part of your brain gets hurt and suddenly you can't speak, then that brain part must be for speaking.
  • Team B: Holists (with Lashley as a team player)
    • Their idea? The brain functions more as a whole.
    • E.g. A maze is complex (like our city). The rat’s brain needs to use many parts to get through it.

Hint: It’s like comparing a specialized coffee shop to a multi-event arena.
