Why is it important?🔥

  • Globalization has increased participation in activities like adventure tourism in extreme environments.
  • Performance is important for athletes, but safety must be a priority when planning training programs, events (e.g., Marathon Des Sables), and policies for sport and exercise.
  • A small rise in body temperature can cause body proteins to start breaking apart at the molecular level.

Core body temperature (Tc) 🌡️

  • Humans can maintain a reasonably constant core body temperature throughout their lives, regardless of ambient temperature changes.
  • Core body temperature (Tc) is the temperature deep within the body.
  • Shell temperature is the temperature near the body surface (e.g., around the skin). It's usually 1–6°C lower than Tc.
  • We detect thermal stress with temperature sensors located throughout the body, like the skin.

Measuring core body temperature 🌡️

  • Oral Temperature: Mercury thermometer held in the mouth.
  • Tympanic Temperature: Ear thermistor measures tympanic membrane temperature.
  • Rectal Probe: One of the most accurate methods.
  • Gastrointestinal Radio Pill: Expensive; small pill is swallowed and gives off a radio signal.
