Erythropoietin (EPO) & its synthetic buddy rEPO

  • What is rEPO?
    • Think of it as a magic potion that athletes hope will produce more red blood cells. ๐Ÿฉธ
  • Why is rEPO unpredictable?
    • ๐ŸŽฒ It’s a gamble! We can't predict the number of new red blood cells produced.
  • The Downside of Playing with rEPO
    • **Thick Blood Alert!**๐Ÿšจ
      • With too many new red blood cells, our blood can get super thick (like that super thick milkshake that's impossible to sip!). This is called increased blood viscosity.
    • Blood Clotting Drama
      • Thick blood = higher risk of clots!
      • Clots can lead to ๐Ÿ‘Ž
        • Heart attacks
        • Strokes
        • Heart failure
    • Why the drama with blood clots?
      • EPO parties with platelets and the inner blood vessel lining, making clotting more likely.
    • Athlete Trick ๐Ÿšด‍โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’‰: Some combine rEPO with iron injections.
      • Goal? Boost oxygen-carrying blood capacity!
      • Issue? Too much iron = big problems, especially for our liver!
    • High Blood Pressure: After using rEPO, blood pressure goes ๐Ÿ“ˆ during moderate exercise.
      • Mystery Alert! ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ‍โ™‚๏ธ We're not 100% sure why.
      • Real-world Link: Cyclists and rEPO - A sad fact: Over 20 cyclists are believed to have died due to rEPO use. ๐Ÿšด‍โ™‚๏ธโŒ

Beta blockers the good the bad & the ugly

  • Why do people use them?

    • They can slow down heart rate and reduce stress. Sometimes used to calm nerves in non-endurance sports. ๐ŸŒ๏ธ‍โ™‚๏ธ
  • Health Concerns

    • Asthma + Beta Blockers = No Go
      • Can cause bronchospasms! (Imagine trying to breathe through a straw. Not fun! ๐Ÿฅค)
    • Heart Troubles
      • People with heart problems? They might face cardiac failure!
    • Diabetes & Beta Blockers
      • Ups insulin secretion = risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) for type II diabetics.
  • Common Side Effects

    • Brachycardia: Heart's going slow-mo (super low heart rate! ๐Ÿขโค๏ธ).
    • Orthostatic Hypotension: Stand up and... whoa! Big drop in blood pressure.
    • Dizziness: You know, like after spinning in circles!
    • Heart Arrhythmias: Erratic heartbeats! Imagine a drummer who can't keep time. ๐Ÿฅโค๏ธ
    • Feeling Super Tired: Makes sense, right? A slow heart might make us feel sluggish. Not what an athlete wants!
