Homeostasis & adaptation

  • Homeostasis is the body’s way of maintaining a stable internal environment.
  • Adaptations are responses to stressors (like heat or cold) to maintain homeostasis.
  • People in different climatic zones (31 in total) acclimatize to accommodate the environment.

Heat acclimatization

  • It's a natural adaptation to improve exercise performance and heat tolerance in hot climates.
  • Requires exercise in a hot environment, not just exposure to heat.
  • Usually takes 10 to 14 days.
  • Results in better thirst matching water needs and increased total body water (up to 5%).

Acclimatization process

  • Gradually increase total exercise-heat exposure time towards 90-100 minutes per day.
  • Signs of successful acclimatization include lower heart rate and core temperature during sub-maximal exercise, and higher sweat rate.

Benefits of heat acclimatization

  • Increased plasma volume
  • Earlier onset of sweating (at a lower core temperature)
  • More dilute sweat (reduced electrolyte loss)
  • Reduced rate of muscle glycogen use
  • Decreased psychological perception of effort

Real-World Example: Athletes training for the Olympic Games in Tokyo (hot and humid conditions) would benefit from heat acclimatization to improve their performance and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
