Loss of body heat the big four 🌬️

  • Conduction
  • Convection
  • Radiation
  • Evaporation

For example, when you sit on a cold metal bench, you feel cold because of conduction - heat flows from your warmer body to the colder bench.

MVP of body heat control during exercise evaporation💦

Think about it! When you’re exercising, you sweat, and when that sweat evaporates, it cools you down. It's like your body's built-in air conditioner!

Shivering & cold exposure 🥶

When cold, you shiver. This is your muscles producing heat by rapid contraction and relaxation. It’s like your body saying, “Brrr, let's warm up!”

Heat cramps vs. heat stroke 🌞

  • Heat Cramps: Painful muscle contractions due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Heat Stroke: Serious business! High body temperature and dysfunction of the central nervous system. Requires immediate medical attention.

Avoiding dehydration during hot exercise 🔥

Drink plenty of water before and during exercise. Remember, once you're thirsty, you're already starting to dehydrate!

Acclimatizing to exercise in the heat

Over time, your body can adapt: better sweating, reduced salt in sweat, and improved blood circulation!

Cold environments & body heat❄️

Our body traps air and reduces blood flow to the skin. It’s like putting on a warm coat to prevent the cold air from reaching your skin!

Body weight loss = dehydration during exercise

Losing 1% of body weight in fluids = Mild dehydration. Always hydrate!
