Main idea
Our ethical responsibility to learn about different religions could contribute to a more tolerant and understanding world. However, this idea, based on Christian ecumenism, might not be universally applicable due to its specific context and history.
Secular approach and tolerance
It's often assumed that a secular approach to studying various religions can foster tolerance and intercultural understanding. Is this true? Do we get more tolerant as we learn about religious diversity? Or do we need to learn about the belief systems themselves?
Example: Think of the difference between a Biology and a Music class. In Biology, you learn about different species (like religions), and in Music, you learn to appreciate various forms of music by understanding their unique attributes (like understanding belief systems).
