Key context

In 1962, Myanmar, previously known as Burma, was subjected to a coup d'état, or a military takeover. This event marked the commencement of many years of totalitarian military rule. The government's initial goal was to establish a secular socialist state. However, the deeply rooted cultural and religious traditions of Buddhism in Myanmar couldn't be disregarded.

Buddhism in myanmar

Buddhism is not just a religion in Myanmar, it's a way of life that shapes governance and culture. The presence of Buddhism in the country is as ancient as the civilization itself.

Real-World Example: Imagine a school that has been around for centuries, teaching and practicing a particular method of teaching. Suddenly, new management takes over with their own set of ideas, but they can't just remove the existing method entirely because it's been part of the school for so long and has shaped its identity. That's how deeply Buddhism is rooted in Myanmar.
