Introduction

Food production and distribution are critical factors in ensuring that people around the world have access to adequate and nutritious food. However, inequalities in food production can lead to disparities in food availability, impacting both international and intra-national levels. In this article, we'll explore the reasons behind these inequalities and how international trade plays a role in reducing them.

Global distribution of food production & population

  • The global distribution of food production is not evenly matched with the global distribution of population. Some regions have abundant resources, such as fertile land and sufficient water supply, leading to higher food production.
  • Others, however, face challenges like arid environments or poor soil quality, making it difficult to produce enough food to meet their population's needs.

International trade as a solution

  • International trade plays a vital role in reducing food production inequalities. Countries with surplus food can export it to countries where food production is insufficient to meet demand.
  • For instance, the USA, Canada, Argentina, and Malaysia export food to countries like China, Japan, and Singapore, thus balancing the disparities in food production and distribution.

Intra-national level inequalities

  • Inequalities in food production also exist within countries. Factors like poverty, accessibility, infrastructure, and conflict can affect food production and access at a local level.
  • In wealthier areas, food production may be higher due to better resources and infrastructure, while poorer regions may struggle to produce enough food.

Global food inequality & its impact

  • Shockingly, approximately one billion people suffer from insufficient dietary intake, while another billion are overweight due to a lack of nutritious food choices.
  • Food inequality at both international and intra-national levels contributes to this issue, leaving many without access to a balanced diet.
