Intergovernmental panel on climate change (ipcc) πŸ”

  • What it is: The UN's scientific assessment branch for everything climate change.
  • Purpose: Provide policymakers juicy tidbits on:
    • Climate change science
    • Its looming impacts
    • Potential risks
    • Options to adapt and mitigate
  • Origin: Birthed by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization in 1988. Talk about team effort!
  • Members: 195 countries (That's a big family reunion!)
  • Working Groups (like the departments of a company):
    • WG I - Physical Science Basis (The Brainy Bunch 🧠)
    • WG II - Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability (The Problem Solvers πŸ› οΈ)
    • WG III - Mitigation of Climate Change (The Green Warriors 🌿)

🌎 Real-world example: Ever heard of the term "global warming"? The IPCC's findings are a big reason why it's in our daily vocab!

🌐 United nations framework convention on climate change (unfccc)

  • Goal: Stabilize those pesky greenhouse gas concentrations so we don’t cause irreversible damage to our climate system.
  • Members: 197 parties, and they’ve been partying (meeting) every year since 1995.
  • Milestones:
    • 1997, Kyoto: Established legal targets for MEDCs (Major Economically Developed Countries).
    • 2015, Paris: Ambition level πŸ’―! Set goal to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C (previously it was 2°C).

🌐 Real-world example: The Paris Agreement! Ever seen countries come together to limit global warming? That's them acting on this goal.

🌿 National adaptation programmes of action (napas)

  • What it is: It's like an LEDC’s (Less Economically Developed Countries) wishlist to the UNFCCC. They detail what they need to adapt to climate change.
  • Bonus: Once they've submitted a NAPA, LEDCs can get some financial love πŸ’° from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

🌐 Real-world example: Think of NAPAs as a letter to Santa, but instead of toys, countries ask for support to fight climate change.
