Glocalization is a portmanteau of globalization and localization. It refers to the adaptation of international products around the particularities of a local culture where they are sold. McDonald's is a perfect example of this process in action.

• The journey of McDonald's started in the USA and Canada, then expanded to Europe, Australia, and Japan in the 1970s. By the end of the 1970s, it had consolidated its presence in Europe and New Zealand and penetrated South America, particularly Brazil.
• McDonald's further expanded its reach to South America, Mexico, parts of Europe, and Southeast Asia in the 1980s. By the 1990s, it had a presence in China, Russia, and parts of the Arab world.
• Over half of McDonald's restaurants are located in the United States. However, the UK has over 600 outlets, Brazil over 250, China nearly 200, and Thailand nearly 50.
• Though famous for its corporate uniformity, McDonald's has localized and adapted to traditional cultural forms and practices in different regions.
