Economic Crisis & the "Bread Problem" 🍞
- Food Crisis: By summer 1918, cities were starving.
- Why? The Ukraine, Russia's "bread basket", was handed over to Germany via the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
- Real-World Analogy: Imagine having a local grocery store that provides all your food. One day, it closes, and the closest store is miles away!
- Peasants vs. Lenin
- Shops were empty. Prices soared.
- Peasants weren’t selling produce.
- Lenin's solution? Send squads to find grain. Encourage poorer peasants to seize food from richer ones.
- Outcome: More people started opposing the Bolsheviks.
Red vs. White vs... Green? The Sides of Conflict 🔴🔵
- Whites: Varied group. Included liberals, ex-tsarists, nationalists, foreign forces, and more.
- Reds: Primarily the Bolsheviks. Composed of the Red Army, the Kronstadt sailors, volunteers, and defectors from the collapsed Imperial Army.
- Greens: Peasant armies. Prioritized their local areas over any political side.
- Fun Fact: This wasn’t just a "good vs. evil" Hollywood movie. It was super complex, with peasants sometimes fighting just to defend their own backyard!
