The Purpose of the UN 🎯

Original Vision

  • The UN was the spiritual sequel to the League of Nations. 🎬
  • It aimed to promote peace, international security, and protect smaller countries from the schoolyard bullies (aka powerful nations). 🌈

Key Aims

  • Keep the peace, dude. ☮️
  • Be everyone’s friend. 🤝
  • Solve problems together. 🛠️
  • Be the ultimate squad for collective action. 🤖

Fun Fact: Ever heard of 'Avengers: Endgame'? The UN wanted to be the Avengers of the real world, stopping wars instead of super-villains. 🦸

The Principle of Collective Security 🤝

Definition: Working together to fend off the bad guys (aggressor states). 🤜🤛

  • It’s like when you and your buddies stick together so the school bully can’t pick on you. 🎒

Important People: Roosevelt and Churchill were the Tony Stark and Steve Rogers of this idea. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

Problem with Predecessor: The League of Nations lacked muscle because countries weren’t committed to sending troops. The UN planned to hit the gym! 🏋️‍♂️

Structure of the UN 🛠️

General Assembly: A place where all countries, big or small, get a voice. 🗳️

  • Kinda like your school's student council meeting. 🎤

Security Council: The big kids' table. They decide the important stuff. 🛡️

  • Permanent members: USA, UK, USSR, China, (and later France). 🌐
  • They have ‘veto’ power, like a "NOPE" button they can slam when they don’t like something. ❌

Main Functions

  • A global chit-chat zone.
  • A gang for taking action.
  • Improve the world without flexing muscles.
  • Be the world’s moral compass. 🧭
