🔍 Main Idea: The ocean has layers. How these layers mix (or don't mix) is affected by climate change, which can impact marine life, ocean currents, and even global warming!

The Layered Ocean - Making Sense of Stratification

  • Stratification is the layering of the ocean based on density.
  • Think of a Stratified Fruit Salad 🍎🍌🍇
    • Top Layer: Warm, light, less salty water.
    • Bottom Layer: Cold, dense, salty water.

Mixing it Up - How & Why?

  • The layers mix due to currents, winds, and tides.
  • Imagine pouring cream into hot coffee ☕ - It swirls and eventually mixes.
  • The greater the difference in density, the harder to mix.
  • If there's reduced mixing, the ocean is more stable.

A Warming 🌏 & a Stable Ocean

  • A hotter climate = more stable ocean.
  • Recipe for a Stable Ocean 📜
    • Warm the surface water - it expands!
    • Melt some ice - freshwater pours in, reducing saltiness.
  • More stability = less heat, oxygen, and CO₂ transfer to the deep ocean.
