Flashback to 1980s & 1990s - flood forecasting upgraded

In the 80s & 90s, flood forecasting and warning got more accurate, playing a critical role in mitigating flood problems. Thanks to advancements in weather satellites and radar tech.

Real world example

Despite advancements, over 50% of unprotected homes in England and Wales only receive a flood warning less than 6 hours before the flood. That's like finding out you've a history exam just before lunch when you've been studying geography all morning!

Flood forecasting in low-income countries (LICs)

Most LICs struggle with effective flood forecasting. Bangladesh bucks this trend. Why? Flooding there mostly originates from the Himalayas, giving authorities a warning time of about 72 hours.

Satellites & monsoons

Satellite imagery can help predict floods from monsoon rains. It's like having a bird's-eye view of a giant water balloon about to burst.
