🌞 Defining the greenhouse effect & global warming

  • The Greenhouse Effect is a natural process, without it, Earth would be a lifeless frozen rock! It's Earth's way of retaining some of the sun's heat, keeping our planet cozy and habitable.
  • The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect or Global Warming is a hot topic! It's like Earth putting on too many blankets, getting hotter due to increasing levels of greenhouse gases because of human activities.

🌪 Global climate change & uncertainty

  • Global Climate Change refers to changes in global patterns of rainfall, temperature, sea levels, habitats and the occurrence of natural disasters. These changes are believed to be caused mainly by the enhanced greenhouse effect.
  • Not everyone agrees on the causes, effects, and solutions to global warming. Think of it like a massive, worldwide mystery novel! Some even mix up "global warming" with "the greenhouse effect". Remember: all global warming is greenhouse effect, but not all greenhouse effect is global warming!

👫 Human influence & politics

  • The enhanced greenhouse effect is largely due to human activities, although some natural forces can play a role too.
  • Political and economic interests can influence opinions on global warming. For instance, during the George W. Bush era, many believed oil companies held sway, choosing sides that weren't in the best long-term environmental interest, but benefited them and their political allies in the short term.

🏭 Industrialization, globalization & greenhouse gases

  • The world's greenhouse gas increase is tied to industrialization, trade, and globalization. As more countries industrialize and adopt a consumer culture, they contribute more to atmospheric CO2.
  • High-income countries are a major source of CO2 growth per person, but emerging industrial nations also have a high potential to add to atmospheric CO2.

📊 Understanding emissions with graphs

Construct two bar charts: One to show the largest emitters by country, and the other to show emissions per person by country. This will give you a visual idea of who's contributing most to global warming.
