Hello, geography enthusiasts! In this chapter, we'll be diving into the exhilarating world of global communication infrastructure. Don't yawn, it's exciting, I promise! We'll cover everything from snazzy smartphones to the sneaky dominance of the internet, with some interesting examples along the way. So, let's get started, shall we?

The digital revolution

The internet - the digital king

  • The internet is ruling the roost with more advanced software, faster processing speeds, and larger storage capacity. It's like an endless digital buffet.
  • People now expect to find any information they need online, whether they're researching for a homework assignment or looking up the best pizza place nearby. (Trust me, the importance of those two things is equal!)
  • Health care, education, government services - everything is now available online, right from your comfy chair!

Developing nations - digital frontier

  • According to the McKinsey Global Institute, half of the mobile internet growth until 2025 will happen in Newly Industrialised Countries (NICs) and Low-Income Countries (LICs).
  • It's predicted that there will be 3 billion new users connected by 2025. To give you a perspective, that's almost the entire population of China and India combined!
  • By 2015, 1.8 billion people will enter the global consumer class - these are folks who can buy goods and services after meeting their basic needs. That's a lot of potential online shoppers!
