🌟 Attention Grabber: Ever heard of "one nation, two systems"? This concept has been at the heart of a major political issue between Taiwan and mainland China. Let's dive in!

🇹🇼 The Taiwan Question:

  • Context: Deng Xiaoping saw potential in Taiwan's unofficial economic relationship with mainland China.
  • Hint: Imagine being away from a family member for years, and then you start chatting with them on social media. The connection is rekindling, and you're thinking maybe, just maybe, there’s hope for a reunion.

1984 Declaration by Deng: 📅

  • Key Point: Deng was open to mainland China being socialist while allowing a capitalist system in areas like Hong Kong and Taiwan.
  • Real-world Example: Think of it like allowing your vegan cousin to bring their own food to a BBQ party. Everyone gets to be who they want, but they're all still at the same party.

Nine Principles (1981) by the PRC: 💡

  • Goal: Peacefully reunite Taiwan with mainland China.
  • Special Status for Taiwan: Post-reunification, Taiwan could enjoy high autonomy as a special region.
  • Caution: It seemed like the PRC was being flexible on Taiwan's autonomy, but it wasn’t really the case. They always insisted on having the final say.
  • Real-world Example: It’s like letting your younger sibling choose the TV show, but you still hold the remote control. You've given them a choice, but under your terms.
