Context: 🌍

  • Hong Kong, Tibet, and Taiwan are considered part of the PRC's region. However, during Deng's leadership, the PRC's global influence started growing, especially in Africa.

Fun Fact: Imagine having a toy store in your neighborhood and then deciding to set up toy stalls in other neighborhoods as well. Deng did something similar but with PRC's influence in Africa.

Expansion into Africa under Deng: 📈

  • Deng Xiaoping's successors furthered the initial expansion.
  • Why Africa? 🤔 Western powers, filled with guilt from their imperialistic histories, were hesitant to oppose China's moves in Africa. So, the PRC made many business deals with African leaders.
  • PRC’s primary concern was establishing an economic hold, rather than evaluating human rights.
  • Quote Highlight: Professor Peter Takirambudde (1995) said, "Wherever there are resources the Chinese are going to go there. They see no evil. They hear no evil."

Real-world analogy: PRC's expansion is like a gamer trying to secure resources in a strategy game. They don't really care about the story; they just want those resources!

PRC’s Strategy in Africa by the Late 90s: 🌐

  • By Deng's passing in 1997, the PRC had started its large-scale venture into Africa, targeting a central region from Sudan to Namibia.
  • Main Economic Goal: Acquire cheap raw materials.
  • How? Chinese businesses bagged contracts to obtain oil, metal ores, diamonds, and timber.
  • PRC also offered aid and low-interest loans to get a strong commercial grip.

Real-world example: Think of this like a popular shop opening a new branch in a different city and giving out opening discounts to attract customers. China did this, but with contracts and loans!
