19th Century China: Agriculture, Trade, and Economic Evolution

Agriculture 🌾
- China's Core: The 19th-century Chinese economy was largely agricultural.
- Who Worked the Land? Most people = peasants. They didn't own the land but rented it from landowners.
- Crop Diversity: Crops and animals varied based on:
- Local climate 🌦️
- Soil quality 🌱
- Why No Progress?
- Peasant conservatism: Old-school mindset.
- China’s belief in self-sufficiency.
- Result? Reluctance to adopt modern farming techniques.
- Population vs. Food: Rising population = more mouths to feed, but stagnant farming methods = food shortage! 🌽➡️👨👩👧👦
Real-world example: Imagine only using your old Nokia in the iPhone era. You'd miss out on many benefits!
Trade 🛍️
- Do We Need Outsiders?: The Manchus were hesitant about foreign trade. But by the 1830s, trade with foreigners was on the rise!
- Tea for Everyone: Thanks to European tastes, tea = China's top export. ☕🍃
- Opium Drama: Big downside? China importing lots of opium. 😬
Real-world example: Think of it as selling loads of awesome homemade lemonade, but spending all that money on unhealthy junk food.
