Introduction

  • Korea was under Japanese rule from 1912-1945.
  • Post-WWII saw Korea become a battleground for US and Soviet interests.

Events Leading to Korea's Division

  • 1945: Soviet Union joined the fight against Japan, entering both Manchuria and Korea.
  • Japan surrenders to Soviet forces in Korea.
  • 38th Parallel: US and Soviet Union drew a border dividing Korea roughly in half.

Differences Between North and South

  • South Korea
    • US occupation begins on 8th September 1945.
    • More people, mainly agricultural economy.
  • North Korea
    • Soviet controlled zone.
    • Less populated, but more factories and infrastructure due to Japanese investment (especially given Japan’s activities in neighboring Manchuria).

Ideological Influences

  • Occupation forces influenced local politics
    • North: Soviet influence pushes for Korean Communist Party's rule. Enter Kim Il-sung, a young communist and nationalist.
    • South: US influence leads to anti-communist stance. General John Reed Hodge is in charge, with strong opposition to communism.

Kim Il-sung: Who was he?

  • Real name: Kim Song-ju.
  • Born in Korea, 1912. Later moved to Manchuria.
  • Linked to the Communist Party in the 1930s.
  • Had strong ties with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, placing him in a strategic position post-WWII.
