Quick Overview ๐Ÿš€

Understanding the causes of wars? Split 'em into

  • Long-term causes
  • Short-term causes (including those "Uh-oh!" moments or triggers)

Long-term Causes

These are the ancient beefs, stuff that's been brewing for ages!

  • For example
    • Korean War's roots? Starts 1945, when the world said, "Let's split Korea into Team Capitalism and Team Communism!"
    • Why? US and the Soviet Union went from BFFs during WWII to Frenemies after.
    • Plus, the leaders from North and South, Kim Il-sung & Syngman Rhee, were like two alpha wolves - each wanted to lead the whole pack (Korea)!

Short-term Causes ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The sparks that light the fire!

  • Stalin, Korea, and Some Unexpected Plot Twists! ๐ŸŽญ
    • 1949: Kim's like, "Hey, Stalin buddy, back me up for a surprise South Korea visit!" Stalin, "Nah, don't wanna annoy the US!"
    • 1950: Stalin pulls a 180. Now he's like, "You got this, Kim! Here, have some cool war toys!"
    • Why the change? ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ‍โ™‚๏ธ
      • Soviet A-bomb: Soviets threw their hat into the nuclear ring. It's like leveling up in a video game.
      • US-Europe Drama: NATO and European tension made Stalin think, "US is busy, let's try something in Asia!"
      • US's China Move: Truman stops helping China's Nationalists, and Stalin's like, "US probably won't mess in Korea either."
      • The Defense Perimeter Speech: This speech was like the US saying, "We'll defend these guys, butNOT you Korea or Taiwan!" Hint, hint?

The Defense Perimeter Speech Misstep ๐ŸŽค

  • Dean Acheson: "Hey, I just wanna say the US isn't getting into Asian dramas!"
  • But what he ended up saying is: "Korea & Taiwan, don't look at us. Maybe try the UN?"
  • ๐Ÿค” Did he accidentally make war more likely? It's like telling your siblings, "Don't touch my chocolate," and then finding it all gone!
