Post-WWII Canada 📌

  • Defense-first! After WWII, Canada was like a turtle 🐢, pulling into its shell. It shrunk its military and prioritized home defense.
  • The Set-up
    • Three parachute battalions
    • Two armored regiments (Think tank divisions!)
    • A regular artillery regiment
    • Some supporting units (like the techies and builders!)
  • Quick Fact: Imagine wanting to lend a friend some toys, but realizing that would leave you with none. Similarly, sending many troops to Korea would have left Canada exposed!

Canada's Initial Aid to Korea 🚢

  • Navy Power: Canada was like, "Hey UN, we got some ships for ya!" 🚢🚢🚢 They sent three naval destroyers:
    • Cayuga
    • Sioux
    • Athabaskan
  • Flying High: An air squad of transport planes 🛫, flying between Washington & Tokyo, and our Canadian pilots even joined the US Air Force missions!
  • Reality Check: When the Korean War seemed like a long movie 🍿, Canada's contributions started to increase.

🇨🇦 The Canadian Army Special Force (CASF)

  • The Idea: The UN may need an army for peacekeeping. So, CASF = Canada's superhero squad to help! 💪
  • Hope & Change: After a game-changing move in Korea (the Inchon landings), everyone thought, "Quick win, yay! 🥳". Canada planned a small contribution.
  • Switcheroo!
    • Canadian troops, mainly from the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade, went for training in the US, thinking they'd chill in Korea post-war.
    • But surprise! When they landed in Korea, the war's tide changed, thanks to a massive push by the Chinese.
    • This made them join the 27th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade. Imagine a squad-up of Canada, UK, Australia, NZ, and India's medical team.
