Who are rosenhan & seligman?

Rosenhan and Seligman are well-known psychologists, famous for their contribution to understanding abnormality. They provided seven criteria to classify behavior as abnormal. Picture them like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, but instead of solving crimes, they're solving the mysteries of the mind!

Seven criteria for abnormality

  • Suffering: This is when the individual feels that something's not right within themselves. Like when you have a toothache, you know it's wrong because it hurts!

  • Maladaptiveness: This is when the individual can't achieve significant life goals, like forming friendships. Imagine trying to play a game of soccer but you just can't kick the ball right - frustrating, right?

  • Unconventional behaviour: This is behavior that stands out, like wearing a Halloween costume when it's not Halloween.

  • Unpredictability/Loss of control: Imagine your best friend who usually likes vanilla ice cream suddenly wanting jalapeno ice cream, that's unpredictability! It's behavior that doesn't seem to follow a consistent pattern.

  • Irrationality: This is when others can't understand why the person is behaving in a certain way. Like if someone decides to go sunbathing in the middle of a snowstorm, it doesn't make sense, right?

  • Observer discomfort: This is when someone's behaviour makes others uncomfortable. Picture being in a library when someone starts loudly playing the bagpipes!

  • Violation of moral standards: This is when behaviour goes against society's moral norms. Like, it's generally frowned upon to cut in line at the amusement park, right?
