Gender as Social Constructs vs. Biology ๐Ÿงฌ

  • It's like choosing your favorite ice cream flavor! Some parts of gender are like vanilla and chocolate, the same everywhere (biological), while other parts change from place to place, like exotic local flavors (social constructs).

Traditional division of labor ๐Ÿงบ๐ŸŽฃ

  • Men and Women Have Different Tasks Traditionally ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿผ‍๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝ‍๐ŸŒพ

    • For example, think of dads going fishing while moms take care of the babies.
    • But wait, it's not always like that!
  • Margaret Mead's Research in New Guinea ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

    • Imagine three neighborhoods in your town with different rules for boys and girls. That's what Margaret Mead found in New Guinea tribes - different places, different gender roles!

Cross-cultural studies ๐ŸŒ

  • Similarities Across Cultures ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

    • Williams and Best found that in many countries, men are seen like superheroes (strong, dominant) and women like caring nurses (nurturing, adaptive). That's the "pancultural gender stereotype."
  • Differences Across Cultures ๐ŸŽญ

    • Ever seen kids in different countries play different games or have different chores? Whiting and Edwards found that in some places, girls hang out with adults more (like having tea parties with dolls), while boys do outdoor stuff like herding cattle.
