Ever wondered why you can draw a picture while jamming to your favorite song without confusing the lyrics with your art? You've got Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch to thank for cracking this mystery in 1974 with their Working Memory Model.

Let's dive in and explore this fascinating concept!

The dual-task technique twist

Researchers used to think that Short Term Memory (STM) was like a small closet, holding around 7 items (give or take 2) of any type, be it sounds or images. But things got weird when they started using the dual-task technique.

Imagine trying to memorize a list of words (that's sound for ya!) while also remembering a bunch of geometrical shapes (visuals, baby!). You'd expect the two tasks to get tangled up, right? But surprise, surprise, they don't always!

For instance, you can sketch a tree while memorizing a sequence of numbers spoken out loud. Your sketch doesn't get all number-y, and you don't start hearing tree shapes. Crazy, right?
