What's evolution anyway? 🌍

  • Evolution = how organisms change over generations due to heritable trait changes. It’s not just random!
  • Think of Charles Darwin. His theory + genetic discoveries = modern evolutionary theory.

Key points of evolutionary theory 🔑

  • 🌱 Organisms want to survive & make babies!
  • 🌼 Every organism is unique even in the same family. Some traits help them thrive better in their environment. We call this differential fitness.
    • 🏆 Real-world example: Think of a cheetah. Faster cheetahs catch more food and live longer. Slower ones? Not so lucky.
  • If you’re fit for your environment, you'll likely live long & have many kids. That’s survival of the fittest.
  • 🧬 Over time, unfit organisms' genes fade away. The fit ones have more babies, making their genes popular in the gene pool! This process = natural selection.
    • 🌿 Real-world example: Imagine green bugs and brown bugs. Birds can see the green ones easier on brown trees, so they get eaten more. Over time, more brown bugs survive and reproduce, and there are fewer green ones.

Why does evolution matter?

  • Evolution explains why we have so many species & why they look and act the way they do.
  • Ever thought why humans and chimps seem alike? 🐵 Our DNA is 98% similar! We also share 90% with cats, 69% with rats, and even 60% with chickens & fruit flies.
    • 💡 This means studying animals can help us understand human behavior!
