Body's response to exercise ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  • The body adjusts various systems in response to exercise.
  • Our exercise capacity varies based on how hard these systems are pushed.
  • Think about it: Have you ever seen someone sprint the length of a marathon? Nope! That’s because of the body’s limits.

What's VO2max anyway? ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

  • VO2max: the maximum amount of oxygen one can use.
  • How's it measured? By checking the air we breathe out during increasing exercise intensity.
  • Imagine trying to blow up a balloon bigger than its capacity. At some point, it won't inflate any further. That's similar to reaching your VO2max.

Why care about VO2max? ๐Ÿค”

  • VO2max = Aerobic Capacity
  • Important for two extreme groups
    • Severely limited patients (Low VO2max)
    • Elite endurance athletes (High VO2max)
  • Example: An elite marathoner can run super long distances because of their high VO2max, but someone with health issues might find a short walk challenging.

The fick equation ๐Ÿ“

  • Links VO2max, maximum cardiac output, and maximum arterio-venous oxygen difference.
  • VO2max = Maximum cardiac output x Maximum arterio-venous oxygen difference

Training adapts our body ๐Ÿ’ช

  • Endurance training results in
    • Improved blood flow.
    • More capillaries around muscle fibers = better oxygen supply!
  • Kids vs. Adults? Kids have smaller hearts, so their cardiac output is lesser. But they compensate by using oxygen differently.
