Need Achievement Theory - What's That? ๐Ÿš€

  • Introduced by McClelland and elaborated by Atkinson.
  • The theory says motivation has two sides:
    • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Wanting to succeed (Imagine the feeling when you score the winning goal!)
    • ๐Ÿ“‰ Wanting to avoid failure (Nobody likes to be the reason their team lost, right?)

Achievement Motivation Are you a Go-Getter or a Steer-Clearer? ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  • McClelland and Atkinson think of achievement motivation as a part of your personality.
    • Some people are more driven by success than the fear of failing. They're called high achievers.
    • Others are more scared of failing than they are driven to succeed. They're the low achievers.
  • But here's the twist: If there's a high chance of winning and great rewards, even the low achievers might want to give it a go!

The Ingredients of Need Achievement Theory ๐Ÿ”

There are 5 components

  • Personality Factors: Who you naturally are.
  • Situational Factors: What's happening around you.
  • Resultant Tendencies: Your behavior based on your personality and the situation.
  • Emotional Reactions: How you feel about the outcome.
  • Achievement-related Behaviours: How you act based on your motivation.
