Intro to Achievement Goal Theory ๐ŸŒŸ

  • In sporty settings, most peeps wanna show they’re super good and hide they’re bad.
  • BUT! We can look at ‘being good’ in two main ways:
    • Task Involvement ๐Ÿง
    • Ego Involvement ๐Ÿ’ช

Whatโ€™s Task Involvement? ๐Ÿงฉ

  • All about mastering a skill, like becoming a wizard at dribbling a football.
  • Focuses on learning, putting in the effort, and growing better every day.
  • Like when you play a game just to beat your own high score!

Real-world example: ๐ŸŒ Think of a skateboarder practicing a trick, over and over. They might fall 100 times, but they keep going because they're focused on mastering the trick, not what others think.

Ego Involvement? Say what? ๐Ÿ†

  • Wanting to show you’re better than others.
  • Like aiming to win a race, and ideally without sweating too much.
  • You're in it to win it, and show everyone else how cool you are!

Real-world example: ๐ŸŒ Imagine running in a race just to get a medal and bragging rights, not necessarily to improve your personal best time

The Big Trio of Motivatio ๐ŸŒช

  • Achievement Goals: What you aim for.
  • Perceived Ability: How good you think you are.
  • Achievement Behaviour: How you act based on the above.
