Skill vs. ability ๐Ÿคน๐Ÿค”

  • Skill: A learned ability to bring about pre-determined results with maximum certainty. Think of it as learning to play a cool riff on your guitar.
  • Ability: Natural aptitude or talent. It's like being born with a good voice, even if you've never had singing lessons.

๐ŸŒŽ Example: LeBron James has the ability (natural talent) for basketball, but he also spent years developing the skill to shoot three-pointers.

Three characteristics of skilled performance ๐Ÿ’ช

  • Consistency: Producing similar results every time.
  • Efficiency: Not wasting energy; smooth movements.
  • Accuracy: Hitting the target or achieving the goal.

Top 3 abilities for learning ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒŸ

  • Perception: Recognizing and interpreting information.
  • Memory: Storing and recalling information.
  • Coordination: Moving different parts of the body in a coordinated way.

Sporting terms ๐ŸŽพโšฝ

  • Cognitive Skill: Thinking skills like game strategies.
  • Example: Deciding whether to pass or shoot in soccer.
  • Perceptual Skill: Interpreting and making sense of information.
  • Example: A goalie estimating the ball's path in hockey.
  • Perceptual-motor Skill: Combining perception and movement.
  • Example: A tennis player seeing an incoming ball and deciding when and how to swing.

Whole-practice & its awesomeness ๐Ÿˆ๐ŸŽพ๐Ÿ

  • Example: A serve in tennis.
  • Whole-practice means learning a skill in its entirety rather than in parts.
  • It's beneficial because the whole movement becomes one fluid motion, like practicing a complete dance routine.
