Key vocabulary

Historiography: The study of how history is written (think of it as the history of history)

AOK: Areas of Knowledge. Here, it refers to history.

Summary

Once upon a time, there was an ever-changing story known as "history". How we understand and write this story is called historiography! It’s like the backstage pass to understanding the drama of the past.

Now, historiography is a huge umbrella and under it, we find many specific histories. One of these is the historiography of colonialism. Think of it like a detective story, where historians sleuth out different sources, methods, and controversies to understand how colonialism happened and what influenced historians when they wrote about it.

Real-world example: Imagine you're looking at a painting. You could describe what you see in many ways: maybe focusing on the colors, the subjects, or the artist's technique. Similarly, historians can view and write about history from different perspectives!

Know your historians

In the past, a lot of British men from Oxford and Cambridge universities made big contributions to historiography. But, just like in the Avengers, not all heroes are from the same place. Writers from around the world have shaped our understanding of history.

Real-world example:  Think about your favorite sports team - every player has a unique role and contributes to the overall success of the team. It's the same with historians: they all bring something special to the study of history!
